13/35 17-0 - Grady preparing arch bar for welding repair.           Return to MSR&LHA Home page

This photo begins a series of shots of several steps of repairing an arch bar, broken on one side, adjacent to a bolt hole. It was noticed that the opposite ends of the bar were nowhere close to being in alignment, and like the other side frame, the bolts could not be installed without damage. Unlike the other arch bar, the holes were all drilled correctly, so what was the problem? This is when the fracture was discovered, and it was on the correct side to allow the one end "to point off into left field". The first step of the repair process was to torch out the faulty steel, and grind it clean in preparation for welding.
